Choosing An Air Compressor Spray Gun

Comparison Review of the 6 fuji spray auto compressor guns

Fuji Spray Auto MP-V8 Spray Gun Optimized for Automotive Clear Coats

Fuji Spray Auto MP-V8 Spray Gun Optimized for Automotive Clear Coats

The newer Fuji V8 gravity feed spray guns are professional paint sprayers optimized for the automotive aftermarket industries: auto body shops, collision repair, auto refinishing, touch-up, and other automotive paint spraying projects.

The earlier Fuji X-series air compressor spray guns are also optimized for high production shops. The Fuji LX-20 spray guns are optimized for woodworking and refinishing shops, while the Fuji MPX-30 spray guns are versatile for all coatings.

Why Fuji mid-pressure (MP) spray guns, also known as Reduced-pressure (RP) spray guns?

  • MP spray guns will spray faster than both HVLP compressor and HVLP turbine guns. Compared compared with standard air compressor paint sprayers, mid-pressure guns provide better control and less overspray, bounce back, and waste.

  • The softer spray, compared with standard compressor guns, makes it easier to achieve a fine, smooth finish.

  • Thick coatings require less dilution than with an HVLP turbine system.

  • These air compressor spray guns are environmentally friendly, VOC-compliant, and cost-effective -- with transfer efficiency rate in excess of 65 percent

Quick guide to which Fuji spray auto compressor spray gun to choose:

For each of the six Fuji air compressor spray guns, air caps are available that let you spray the whole range of finishes, from thin to thick. Any of these spray guns CAN spray any finish. For high efficiency, however, each gun is designed and optimized for certain uses.

  • New Fuji H-V8 high volume low pressure gravity feed gun (6863G) is optimized for spraying automotive base coats. Recommended air compressor settings: 12.2 cfm @ 35 psi.

  • New Fuji MP-V8 mid-pressure gravity feed gun (6852G) is optimized for spraying automotive clear coats. Recommended air compressor settings: 14.7 cfm @ 28 psi.

  • Fuji MPX-30 mid-pressure guns (introduced in 2017) are designed for general use. Recommended compressor settings: 13.8 cfm @ 36 psi.

    • Gravity-feed spray gun (Fuji 6355G) - for fine finishes, including automobile clear coat.

    • Siphon spray gun (Fuji 6350S) - especially for thicker coatings like latex paint.

  • Fuji LX-20 low pressure spray guns (introduced in 2018) are designed for high-production woodworking and cabinet finishing shops, with a soft spray that droplets of fast-drying finishes time to melt together, with fewer droplets bouncing back: shellac, solver-based lacquer, and water-borne finishes. Recommended compressor settings: 15.2 cfm @ 26 psi.

  • Gravity-feed spray gun (Fuji 6265G) for spraying smaller areas.

  • Pressure pot spray gun (Fuji 6260P)for spraying large areas of fine finish -- from 2-quart or 1.5-gallon pressure pots.

Note: To keep contamination out of spray guns, Fuji Spray Auto recommends using one spray gun for solvent-based coatings, a different gun for water-borne coatings. This minimizes cleanup and labor time in a high production shop.

Available FLUID CUPS:

If you want to spray a large area from a pressure pot, only the two pressure pot spray guns in the X-series will do this: the Fuji LX-20 Pressure (6260P) and the MPX-30 Siphon (6350S).

If you want to spray from a quart bottom-feed cup, your only choice is the MPX-30 Siphon (Fuji 6360S-MP-C-17K). This cup holds more than the gravity-feed cups, and many users like the balance of a bottom-feed cup. A siphon gun sprays best straight at a vertical surface, but you can spray at any angle if you use a 3M PPS 2.0 kit.

Gravity feed spray guns spray well in all directions — ideal for most automotive use.

If you want a gravity spray gun with the option to use 3-ounce mini cups (#6375), choose a Fuji X-series spray gun: the Fuji LX-20 Gravity (6265G), or the Fuji MPX-30 Gravity (6355G).

The 3M PPS 2.0 disposable cup system lets you spray in any direction. It also minimizes waste and cleanup. All the Fuji Auto guns except the LX-20 Pressure gun can use PPS 2.0, when equipped with the proper adapters.

“PPS” stands for Paint Preparation System. Filters are built right into the lids, and liners are available in a full range of sizes:

  • 3-ounce

  • 6-ounce

  • 13.5 ounce

  • 22 ounce

  • 28 ounce

The Fuji Spray Auto guns use standard PPS 2.0 kits, widely available elsewhere. I sell the PPS 2.0 adapters here, but the other PPS 2.0 supplies here on this site are ONLY for hvlp turbine spray guns, NOT compressor guns.

Air Compressor Requirements

If you already have the air compressor you’d like to use, check its capacity carefully before choosing which spray gun to buy. Fuji Spray says that for this purpose, air compressor CFM @ the recommended cfm is usually more important than the maximum psi.

Recommended air compressor settings for optimum use, in order of lowest to higher cfm:

  • H-V8 - 12.2 cfm @ 35 psi

  • MPX-30 - 13.8 cfm @ 36 psi

  • MP-V8 - 14.7 cfm at 28 psi

  • LX-20 -15.2 cfm @ 26 psi

Note that while there are only six basic models, they have variations that lead to a total of 15 actual Fuji Auto compressor spray gun choices.

The Fuji V8 and X-Series spray guns share these features:

New Fuji H-V8 Gravity Feed Spray Gun 6863G-H-V8-N - Optimized for Automotive Base Coats

  • Spray both solvent and water-borne coatings. Stainless steel fluid passages resist corrosion even with water-borne finishes. This is important for long term durability in high production shops.

  • Non-bleed (spray only when trigger pulled) — for fine control and minimal waste.

  • Precise fan pattern adjustment with convenient side-mounted control;

  • Ergonomic, comfortable, handles and controls;

  • Fuji Spray Auto 12-month warranty.

Fuji Spray Auto V8 Series Spray Guns - New!

The Fuji V8 spray guns, designed specifically for the automotive industry, add these features:

Fuji 6873 optional Digital Air Flow Gauge

  • Superb new air and fluid management design, for a perfectly balanced and consistent spray pattern.

  • Forged aluminum gun body;

  • 360-degree swivel air inlet, for lightweight comfort (by reducing spray gun drag);

  • Expanded range of air cap setups;

  • Optional Digital Air Flow Gauge with Locking Adjustment Valve;

  • Two models, the Fuji H-V8 optimized for spraying auto base coats, and the Fuji MP-V8 optimized as a clear coat spray gun. This minimizes the labor time needed for paint preparation and fine tuning each paint sprayer.
